Where can I get health insurance?

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) makes it easier to get affordable health insurance plans in Montana, even if you haven't been able to in the past. You can get coverage through:

  • A company, like Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois
  • A licensed insurance agent
  • The Health Insurance Marketplace
  • Your employer for employer-offered plans
  • Programs like Medicare or Medicaid if you qualify

This year, Open Enrollment begins Nov. 1 and ends Jan. 15. You can enroll in a plan that fits your needs now. Make sure you choose coverage by Dec. 15 for your coverage to start Jan. 1.

Where Your Premiums Go

Under the Affordable Care Act, all individual and family plans are required to spend at least 80% of your deductible on care. This helps make sure you're getting a fair value for your plan. Here are just a few examples of what your deductible could go towards:

  • Claims for covered health care
  • Health and wellness programs
  • Helping you manage chronic conditions

This percentage is known as the Medical Loss Ratio (MLR). If we're out of alignment for the ACA requirements, we'll send you a check covering the difference.
